Crestabond PP-04 A Specialized Primerless MMA Adhesive for Low Surface Energy Plastics

Crestabond PP-04

Crestabond PP-04, developed by Scott Bader, is a two-component 1:1 acrylic adhesive specifically designed for structurally bonding low surface energy substrates such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and other thermoplastic polyolefins (TPOs). These materials, known for their non-polar, non-porous, and chemically inert surfaces, typically repel adhesion, making bonding challenging. Crestabond PP-04 overcomes this barrier by bonding these substrates without the need for surface pre-treatment, offering a robust solution for demanding structural applications. With excellent mechanical properties and environmental resistance, this adhesive is ideal for industries requiring reliable bonds on difficult-to-bond plastics.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the key features, benefits, technical specifications, and application guidelines for Crestabond PP-04, providing a comprehensive guide for professionals seeking an effective adhesive solution for polyolefins and other substrates.

Surface Preparation

Achieving a strong and durable bond with Crestabond PP-04 requires proper surface preparation, even though it is designed for low surface energy substrates without pre-treatment. Follow these guidelines to ensure optimal performance:

General Guidelines

  • Remove oil, grease, dirt, or release agents using a degreasing agent (e.g., acetone or iso-propanol).
  • Allow the solvent to fully evaporate before bonding.
  • For improved bond durability, mechanically abrade or chemically etch surfaces, followed by a second degreasing step.
  • Avoid using petrol, low-grade alcohol, or paint thinners.

Specific Substrates

  1. Metals:

    • Clean with an alcohol/solvent wipe and ensure surfaces are dry.
    • For metals like carbon steel, mechanical abrasion followed by solvent wiping may be necessary.
  2. Thermoplastics:

    • Degrease with a suitable solvent (e.g., iso-propanol) to remove dust and contaminants.
    • For low surface energy plastics like PP and PE, no additional surface treatment is typically required, but cleaning ensures optimal results.
  3. Composites:

    • Use peel-ply or solvent cleaning to achieve a dust-free, dry surface.
    • For laminates older than 3 days, clean with a lint-free cloth and solvent.
    • Mechanically abrade gelcoat or molded surfaces to remove release agents.
    • Test bond strength for epoxy laminates prior to application.

Application Instructions

To ensure optimal performance with Crestabond PP-04, adhere to the following steps:

  1. Surface Preparation:

    • Clean substrates thoroughly as outlined above.
    • Confirm surfaces are dry and free of contaminants.
  2. Dispensing:

    • Use well-maintained bulk dispensing equipment.
    • Dispense adhesive slowly onto a non-bonding surface until the mixed bead is uniform in color (off-white).
    • Verify cure quality before starting the bonding process.
  3. Bonding:

    • Apply enough adhesive to fill the bond gap (0.5–5 mm).
    • Mate parts with sufficient pressure to avoid dry bonds.
    • Clamp parts to prevent movement during curing.
    • Complete bonding within the 3–5 minute working time.
  4. Temperature Considerations:

    • Maintain adhesive, activator, and substrates at 18–25°C (64–77°F) for consistent working and fixture times.
    • The adhesive can be used directly from refrigerated storage (5–8°C), but allow parts to reach workshop temperature for optimal performance.
    • To reduce fixture time to approximately 90 minutes, bond parts at room temperature for 5 minutes, then place in an oven at 50°C (122°F) for 90 minutes.
  5. Post-Application:

    • Avoid moving the assembly until the fixture time is reached (165–180 minutes at 23°C or 80–100 minutes at 50°C).
    • Ensure full curing before subjecting the bond to stress.

Note: Crestabond PP-04 is for industrial/commercial use only and not suitable for household applications. Users must verify adhesive suitability for their specific substrates.

Storage and Shelf Life

  • Shelf Life: 9 months from the date of manufacture when stored in a refrigerator between 5°C and 8°C (41°F and 46°F).
  • Storage Conditions:
    • Store in original containers, away from direct sunlight.
    • Avoid temperatures above 8°C (46°F), as the product may thicken and become unusable.
    • Never freeze the product.
    • Must be transported in temperature-controlled conditions.
  • Packaging:
    • Available in pre-packed 50 ml and 400 ml side-by-side cartridges.

Health and Safety

Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed health and safety information. Crestabond PP-04 should be handled by skilled individuals, with appropriate precautions taken during use.
